Obama to appoint talk radio's executioner?
Democrat Henry Rivera, a former commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission, is expected to head President-elect Barack Obama's FCC transition team, a move that has sparked fear in media circles that the Fairness Doctrine may return to silence conservative talk radio.
If reenacted, the "Fairness Doctrine" would require broadcasts over the public airwaves to give equal time to opposing political views. For talk radio, which boomed after the law's repeal in 1987 by building an audience devoted to conservative talk, the law's return would decimate the industry's marketability.
Many fear the "Fairness Doctrine" would drive talk radio hosts – like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Michael Savage – out of business.
Brian Maloney of the blog The Radio Equalizer said in his post, "Meet Talk's Executioner," he believes Rivera will use his position to bring back the law for that very purpose.
Rivera, according to Maloney, "is expected to lead the push to dismantle commercial talk radio that is favored by a number of Democratic Party senators. Rivera will play a pivotal role in preventing critics from having a public voice during Obama's tenure in office."
(Story continues below)
Rivera served on the five-member FCC from 1981 to 1985 under Republican chairman Mark Fowler. He is now a partner at the Wiley Rein law firm, the same firm current FCC chairman Kevin Martin worked at prior to his appointment to the FCC.
Rivera resigned from the FCC in 1985. The remainder of his term was served by President Reagan appointee Patricia Diaz Dennis, who opposed the Fairness Doctrine. The law was then repealed in 1987 after the FCC admitted it "had the net effect of reducing rather than enhancing the discussion of controversial issues of public importance."
Rivera himself has not confirmed his selection as Obama's FCC transition team chief, first reported by Multichannel News.
"The only thing I can tell you is that there will be a release of the folks involved in that," Rivera told the News. "I just can't comment on anything. They told us not to talk to the press."
Rivera also declined to answer WND's request for his position on reinstating the Fairness Doctrine.
Obama's position on the law also remains unclear.
"Sen. Obama does not support reimposing the Fairness Doctrine on broadcasters," campaign press secretary Michael Ortiz told Broadcasting & Cable earlier this year. "He considers this debate to be a distraction from the conversation we should be having about opening up the airwaves and modern communications to as many diverse viewpoints as possible."
As WND reported, ATI-News President Brad O'Leary examined Obama's legal and organizational attempts to silence media detractors during the presidential race and came to a different conclusion.
"Barack Obama has shown a stunning lack of tolerance for free speech throughout the course of this campaign," said O'Leary. "His presidency, combined with supermajorities for Democrats in Congress, would almost certainly bring back the so-called 'Fairness Doctrine' and allow the Democrats to snuff out any broadcasters with whom they disagree."
Democrats in Congress have been more definitive in advocating the "Fairness Doctrine."
In June, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., affirmed her support to Human Events reporter John Gizzi.

RE: Obama to appoint talk radio's executioner?
Nah..
I think they figure they have enough on their platter without THAT mess . Fact is, there are so many outlets for terrestrial talk radio these days with folks able to go to XM, the WWW, and podcasts in the car that stifling the terrestrial outlets would have little effect on the silencing of political adversaries, the main point of the "Fairness" Doctrine. They know that.
Another thing these Fairness advocates know is that you have to be careful what you wish and lobby for. With court challenges, especially after responsible Republican leadership is back in power, we could find the mainstream alphabet media having to be FOXNEWS one night, and their old, reliable socialist selves the next, since they also run over the airwaves. They try to pry radio from TV for these purposes, but since FCC is the controlling authority and they govern the airwaves, the only way to dodge the issue would be for the dinosaur alphabets to go off the air and be strictly cable.
I think The Fairness Doctrine (which was last unfurled in the 1980s) was dredged up a few years back in an attempt to save Air America, which lots of rich liberals had invested in, but never could draw audience, ratings and the lifeblood of radio, advertising . Even Soros got tired of writing checks and even Franken and Maddow got tired of working for free. And Air America went tits up, as we all know: :

I was actually retrieving cached pages from my deleted stuff Jimbo but I don't mind you answering, I don't think the original post got this many replies. Anyhoo, I hope you're right but look at how those freaking tyrants pushed through health care. Something is not right with this administration, they want too much control and power and nothing is going to stop them, so they seem to believe anyway.

Well, given the comedy of their handling of the spill, the wars, the ongoing terror-tries, the drops in the polls, the economy, personnel scandals, leaks, the givebacks to Republicans in the off-year elections and a lot of stuff I'm overlooking, ya have to figure these folks are of spongy spines and narrow shoulders as it is. I have a feeling they're going to try to ride out the summer. Hell, even without taking on new initiatives, events are riding their asses as it is . And, their understanding of the world, how things work is so infantile, their attitudes so childish on everything they're faced with, nothing gets solved with this gang.
The only thing I consider possible and beneficial to them no matter the anger of the rest of us is a ramming through of some form of electoral amnesty for illegals. In a time of rapidly diminishing political fortunes, a freshly-minted 50 or 60 million brand new illegal immigrant Democrats clamoring for benefits would be just the ticket, no?

You just reminded me of something I heard last night Jimbo, obama is THINKING of giving "across the board amnesty" to ALL illegal aliens, of course they SAY there is only about 12 million but they've been saying that for the last 20 years or so, they've been covering up the REAL numbers so IMO there is probably about 40 million or more, JMO but I would bet you anything that that is more closer to the truth.

It's more, with more every day. With Obama and Democrats in power, as many as can get in under the wire will. You don't front-load the demographics of the biggest 250 U.S. cities with Hispanics on only 12 million. You do it with tens of millions, maybe even 100 million. Remember, these folks average 6 children per family, have been at it since the last amnesty in 1986, so do the math.

Well they say that there is about 3k a day entering so the math is pretty easy to figure out. The dems wont touch border control with a ten foot pole because they WANT those votes. Of course the republicans didn't do anything about it all those years either.
